Found in the lovely old country town on Midhurst, The Spread Eagle
Hotel and Health Spa is a perfect base location to explore this beautiful
part of England. The old town of Petworth, antique center of the
South, is close by as is Chichester with its Cathedral and harbor.
Close too is Fisbourne Roman Palace and the castle town of Arundel.
Golfing is nearby, as is a polo field.

Originally a coaching inn, the hotel has some timbered buildings, implying
that it goes back at least to the fifteenth century. The spread-eagle
crest was the badge of Germany, and the implication was that they always
had good stocks of German wines (hock), which was very popular in mid-16th
Century.
Modern day guests will find comfortable surroundings in the historic
lounge bar.

The restaurant has been awarded two rosettes by the AA (British Automobile
Association), signifying fine dining.

The hotel is rated 3 stars by the AA and has a collection of bedrooms
and suites in both old and new sections of the hotel.
Some rooms are in the historic section, others are in Jacobean Hall
connected to the conservatory, and a new addition beyond the restaurant
holds more accommodations.
The huge "Queen's Suite" was directly over the bar in the oldest part of the hotel - I felt as though we were sleeping in a wonderful 14th century museum! A small sitting room led to the immense bedroom. While it was the largest suite, it had a rather small (double sized) four poster bed and one of the smallest bathrooms in the hotel. Some of our party stayed in the 3rd floor rooms - very charming accommodations in various sizes with sloped ceilings under the roof line. Others stayed in the new section - pretty modern rooms with large bathrooms. |
